Bad Grandpa (Review)
I’ve to be honest and say I didn’t have big expectations for this movie. I’m a huge fan of the Jackass show and movies but Johnny Knoxville’s “Bad Grandpa” character isn’t one of my favourites and I wasn’t sure he could carry a whole movie.
A big part of me also hoped that Ryan Dunn’s death was a giant elaborate Jackass stunt and he’d reappear in this movie, he was always my favourite and I don’t think I’ve really accepted he’s dead.
Spoiler alert– I think he’s actually dead.
Knoxville plays 86 year old Irving Zisman (who first appeared in the Jackass tv show in 2001.) He takes a journey across America to deliver his 8 year old grandson Billy to his deadbeat dad because his drug addict mother is going to prison.
Hilarious hijinks ensue with a hidden camera aspect messing with the unsuspecting public a la “Borat”.
I hate child actors in general, they usually sound like they are giving a bad Late Late Toy Show presentation but the kid in this movie, 9 year old actor Jackson Nicoll, is my new hero, he’s awesome.
There’s a scene in the movie centred round a “Toddlers and Tiaras” style beauty pageant performance which is probably my favourite scene in any movie I’ve seen this year and Johnny Knoxville proves he still has huge big baggy balls with some stupid/brave stunts and run ins with the public.
I don’t think this movie is quite as good as the Jackass movies, it’s missing the camaraderie between the cast members and the stunts aren’t quite as memorable but saying that its still so very, very wrong. I’d urge you all to go see it, there’s plenty of laugh out loud funny bits and no doubt you’ll watch half of it through your fingers.
Bad Grandpa is out everywhere this Thursday. I give it 6.5 out of 10, but for someone who generally scores movies quite low, this is really good!
